Unlike Indonesia, Malaysia's skateboarding scene is quite small compared to the Indonesian skateboarding scene. But Malaysia also has tons of talented skateboarders who have never shown up to the surface. Of the five skateboarders who appeared and had their first-ever video part in Sudut Pandang, four are rookies. Azwyn, Makassar-born, sees them as having potential in skateboarding and asks them without hesitation. Gathered them to film their potential in the "Sudut Pandang" video.

Hello guys, how are you doing lately?

Danish
Hi, Assalamualaikum good.
Irfan
Wassup I'm doing good.
Haris
Hi, Assalamualaikum good.
Awyn
Yooo! Alhamdulillah doing great!
Hadif
All good.
Faizal
Waalaikumsalam Vasemedia, alhamdulillah doing good, just enjoying skateboarding.

Where did the idea of Sudut Pandang come from?

Awyn
I don't remember where it came from, hahaha!

Why did you choose these five skaters among other skaters all over Malaysia?

Awyn
I don't know, man, hahaha! Probably, these kids have the potential to do their on part from my perspective except Faizal, he got his video part before and I can say most of skaters these day think Instagram clip or social media clip are more important than a video part yet barking at the brand to sponsor them without any video part before. Isn’t that funny?

We didn't see any sponsors in this video, despite some riders having current sponsors. Was it all your favor not to have a sponsor on this project?

Awyn
Haha! Yeah, it's all on me. The last time I checked, I don’t think most of our local brands got that vision as a “core” skateboarding brand to make a full video for their brand, except Thieves Skateboards #thvsrules and a few other brands. Most of them are all about starting a skate brand, and that's it. Flexing to everyone that they own a skate company, hahaha! It's hilarious no direction, no vision, no nothing. The only sponsor we got for the project is for the screening venue s/o to PEAK KL, BOX 15 and BURROW SKATESHOP. We really appreciate it because we were not planning to do a screening. I was just to get it done and post it on Youtube, haha!

What vibe are you trying to show from Sudut Pandang?

Awyn
It's just that the video's ratio is 4:3 instead of 16:9. Other than that, there's nothing unique about it; it's just a decent skate video.

How long did you take to film Sudut Pandang?

Awyn
One year, and not every day is a filming day; we only go out stacking clips on the weekend. It depends on those kids' schedules or daily routines because Haris & Danish are still in elementary school & Hadif lives in a different city. Faizal works 9 to 5 on the weekdays & Irfan is still studying in college.

What was your reaction when Awyn the filmer approached you to make a full-lenght video? Was this your first-ever video part?

Was there any pressure to finish the project on time?

Danish
Yes, I was quite pressured before the deadline.
Haris
Honestly, no, I've been skating for four years with my brother, and we didn’t have any experience at all with how to put a trick on a clip, but thankfully, Uncle Awyn and others taught me how and what do’s and don’ts. Thanks to them!
Irfan
Pressure all the time causes a lot of injuries when skating and not being able to fully blast.
Hadif
Yeah, for sure the pressure is on when you hear the deadline is coming, hahaha, but it is just a matter of money and time because this project has no sponsor. We all use our own money and work to get more clips since I live in southern Malaysia, Batu Pahat District in Johor.
Faizal
For myself, none, maybe because I had done a project before, so I was more well-thought-out about what trick selection I had for spots.
Awyn
For me, not much, it's just a few spots/clips that I need to reshoot/repeat for some reason.

Danish
Surprised and excited because I didn’t have any experience. Yes, this is my 1st video part.
Haris
Surprised and excited, this is my first video part.
Irfan
Excited and honored because I have never made a video part, and Awyn is one of the best local filmmakers I've known, and yet this is my first video part. Big thanks to Awyn bagi peluang untuk aku ada dalam Sudut Pandang.
Hadif
I was stoked when Awyn said he wanna do a skate video project and wanted me to be part of it, it’s a journey between spots and battles under the bright sun hahaha but I would like to say thank you very much to Awyn for this opportunity and be patience while I'm struggling with my tricks hahaha.
Faizal
Super stocked since I had finished “3 Serangkai” a few months before, Awyn DM me about the project and was on board immediately.

We know that you are still a student till today, how did you manage your school between go skate down the street to have a footage?

Danish
We will go on the weekend, but it depends on my dad's work schedule.
Haris
Ya same.

Who picked the spot for you? Was it you, or Awyn pushed you to have a trick on the place he wanted?

Danish
Uncle Awyn, haha. Since we are not experienced on the streets.
Haris
Uncle Awyn, but depends on my ability coz I'm 11 years old and the youngest in this video part.
Irfan
To be honest, I didn't choose my spot, I skate nearby. Other skaters have spots because I'm injured a lot and play what I can.
Hadif
Both of us.
Faizal
In the beginning, Awyn would suggest to us these certain spots for all. Then, in mid of the year, Awyn would be ready and we would suggest going where. Towards the end of the project, it was just me texting Awyn, telling him which spot to go.

What was your trick battle?

Danish
Over crook on handrail because I don't have any experience considering I have only been playing for four years but (skatepark) lah but thanks to the guidance, and experience from Uncle Awyn. Alhamdulillah, this is the result.
Haris
50-50 flip out at 3-block Cyberjaya because the spot is quite high & rough for me to flip out.. but thanks for the guidance, and experience from Uncle Awyn. Alhamdulillah, this is the result.
Irfan
Mental.
Hadif
That back tail on the 3-block drop, was painful in the ass the bail and it hurts hahaha.
Faizal
Probably my silent ender. It took me five times to come back to it, and it's always during breakfast hours, and had really busted up shoes.

Any skate videos that inspired you on working Sudut Pandang?

Danish
Transworld video “In Bloom” Evan Hernandez part.
Haris
All Yuto Horigome parts/video.
Irfan
To be honest, we watch a lot of skate videos together, but all the videos we watch are just to pump up our spirit to go skate.
Hadif
David Gravette's Creature Hesh Law video always makes me stoked.
Faizal
Awyn sometimes shares some videos around Asia like Indo, Thai, and many more. And I would just find inspiration from the hard work of those kinds of skate videos.

Awyn
Emm I don't think so, I just get shit done!

Most favorite spot?

Danish
Never. Uncle Awyn is very supportive.
Haris
Never.
Irfan
Never, Awyn da best.
Hadif
Chill guy, so no pressure from him.
Faizal
Nahhh he just tells me “It's almost there”, “you got this next try”.

How did you fund the video?

Awyn
teach them how to execute a trick on a specific spot. they have bunch of tricks they just don't know which spot to apply etc

What was difficulties filming the video?

Awyn
Our own money.

In our point of view, it's rare to see a local skate company having a full-length video such as Thvs skateboards who actively drops videos every year, there was also Peak KL and some others. What is actually going on in the Malaysia skateboarding scene?

Awyn
I don't know, man. It's complicated, I guess not everyone who owned a skate brand knows what to do next. When did Instagram clips matter more than video parts? such a low IQ skater. It's fun! Everyone skates but not everyone understands skateboarding.

Do you have do's and don't's for the skaters

Awyn
Kinda, every filmer knows for example not to do the same trick over and over again.

Any words for Awyn and the project?

Danish
Thanks, Uncle Awyn for the experience, and guidance.
Haris
Thanks, Uncle Awyn for the experiences, guidance, and memories.
Irfan
It was such a great and enjoyable session with Awyn and I hope people enjoy the Sudut Pandang Video.
Hadif
Thank you Awyn for this opportunity, it was a pleasure for me, and also thank you for the homies in Sudut Pandang, big love.
Faizal
Thank you Awyn for the opportunity to shine and development more on my skills. Terima kasih utk pengalaman
Awyn
FUCK WHAT THEY SAID! Keep skating & be humble

Have Awyn scolded you when you take too many tries on landing tricks haha?

Danish
Definitely Menara TM and Putrajaya.
Haris
Putrajaya! There are too many spots you can skate, especially for a kid my age. Hehehe
Irfan
Putrajaya.
Hadif
Putra Jaya has a bunch of good spots actually. Just the kick out is sometimes there, hahaha
Faizal
Menara TM, there's a lot more that can be done there.
Awyn
Putrajaya & a few spots in the city.
